Challenge
Aging sewer and storm water infrastructure systems further increase vulnerabilities for New Jersey’s urban, population-dense communities. Several cities suffer flooding, water contamination and infrastructure damage during both routine rainstorms and extreme weather events. With limited resources, municipalities and utilities have an increased need for reliable solutions to manage their sewage and stormwater in the most sustainable way.
Solution
As a member of Jersey Water Works, WSP collaborated with partners at Rutgers University and New Jersey Future to develop the New Jersey Advanced and Integrated Menu of Strategies for Sustainable Sewer and Stormwater Systems (A∙I∙M∙S4) program. The program comprises a set of cost-effective tools to manage sewer and stormwater infrastructure, while improving the environment, economy and quality of life. It includes strategies that emphasize:
- Implementation and optimization of infrastructure systems.
- Planning and understanding infrastructure systems.
- Green infrastructure.
- Integrated water management.
- Public participation and partnerships.
- Financial and institutional capacity.
The plan also includes a guide to options for effective sewer and stormwater management as well as a checklist to aid municipalities in tracking their progress and ensuring long-term success.
